Families in the Pioneer Valley have many places they can turn for assistance during challenging economic times. The COVID pandemic posed unique challenges for families throughout the Commonwealth, but there were also several sources of assistance unique to the pandemic. This dashboard documents increases in food insecurity throughout the Pioneer Valley and highlights the role played by programs administered by the Department of Transitional Assistance, especially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in helping families meet their basic needs. It also looks at the increased reliance of Pioneer Valley families on local foodbanks operated by the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, providing millions of meals throughout the pandemic.
